There were boys, though.
Although I'd left several pathetic romances wilting back home, I was
ready to meet someone new. Especially when I saw that there were manly teens
who rode horses and gave you gifts just for being pretty. That happened to
Letty. She got a nice ceramic jewelry box from the boy down the road. All she
had to do was sit out in front of the house with a little lipgloss on, and guys
would come by in droves to pay their respects.
I was pretty, too, back then. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to sit
outside at that time. I'd poked myself in the eye with a needle the night
before we started our journey. (Damned clumpy mascara.) Instead of staying home
and going to the doctor to get an eye patch, I'd decided to brave it out in
another country with a folded up napkin. My eye was a fiery red, and the napkin
didn't match any of the cute outfits I'd brought. So for the first couple of
days, I stayed inside and fumed.
