Now that I've scared everyone away...It's time to talk about good things.
1. We finally saw Little Miss Sunshine and, oh my god, it was one of the funniest, awesomest movies I've ever seen in my life. I bet all of you saw it already, but if you haven't, then you totally should.
2. This past weekend, my bf and I saw Notes on a Scandal at the local indie/artsy/whatever-y theater. First, I should tell y'all that I liked it very much. But second, I have to make a confession, and it's that my boyfriend and I are weird and have bad manners. I mean, apparently. We went to the artsy theater, like I said, and we enjoyed the movie, like I said, and so we laughed aloud at certain parts. And we gasped aloud at certain parts. And we were the only ones doing so, and, after a while, it seemed to be getting on the other six audience members' nerves. (Especially when my boyfriend leaned over to me and loudly whispered, "Oh my god, that is so fucked up!") But, oh well. I'm sorry we were into the movie and y'all weren't, you guys.
Again, you should go see that movie. Especially if you've ever been in one of those "friendships" where your "friend" is psycho and secretly hates you, even while being clingy and pretending to love you (and especially if they mix it up by touching you inappropriately, too). If you've ever been in one of those, Notes on a Scandal will be like an awesome horror movie custom-made just for you.
3. I can't believe I'd never in my life seen Houston's Byzantine Fresco Chapel until this past Saturday. We went, and it was very beautiful. Not huge, not action-movie exciting, but just very peaceful and serene and gorgeously made. Rather like the Menil Collection, itself. If you haven't gone yet, you should totally, totally go. The pics on that site don't do it justice. Houston is seriously lucky to have had the de Menil family living here, making awesome stuff for us to look at on weekends for free.

I am so glad you loved Little Miss Sunshine as much as I did. I was surprised that it actually lived up to every bit of the hype, and have been disappointed to see a lot of detractors on the internets who seem like they're just suffering from the "everyone else loved it so I'll say it sucks" syndrome. By the way, I've been reading you for years, back since the Trailer Trash Housewife days, which you should take as a huge compliment because I have the attention span and memory of a five year old. I love your writing and am sincerely glad for every bit of success you've had.# posted by torileighb : 7:32 PM
Tori: Thank you! And, oh my god, I almost linked to Owen Glieberman's negative-ass review, but then decided not to give it any more publicity. I agree with you, it's totally the buck-the-trend syndrome. And I don't care because, the more I think about it, the more I love that movie. It has messages that are still unfolding for me, weeks after I saw it. I'm going to buy the DVD, and I hardly do that for anything.

I totally agree! It was amazing. I watched it in a hungover haze and cried and literally laughed out loud through the whole thing. I just couldn't believe someone actually made that movie. I wanted to watch it again as soon as I saw it. That rarely happens. It reminds me of your old cartoons about the prom and such, which, by the way, are they published anywhere? Because they totally should be.

Both you and my brother loved LMS, so I'll have to put it in the queue.
BTW, you can't scare me away from here.

LMS was totally the kind of movie where I just wanted to hug someone at the end of it. Seriously, I saw it in the theatre and I probably would've hugged the person next to me...even if I didn't know them.
I'm so glad you liked it, too.
(I totally think it's a dark horse for Best Picture. I haven't felt this way since The Full Monty)

I loved Little Miss Sunshine too! Awesome movie!
And I agree. The Byzantine chapel is so serene and beautiful.
Isn't it amazing how much wonderful art this city has? I just blogged about that recently. For example, the sculpture garden at the Museum of Fine Arts has a Rodin and some Matisse sculptures.

Delurking to ask where The Bsantine Chapel is? Sounds like something I must see, since I'm always looking for new things to do here in Houston.

Tori: Thanks. Re: cartoons: No, the ones currently on the site aren't published anywhere. Some of the old ones relating to housewifery are in my first book, though.
Kaijsa: Thank you. And I can't wait til you see the movie and come back to tell us you love it.
Kel: Right?? In a way, I totally hope it wins, but at the same time, comedy never wins and I didn't see many of the contenders in order to make the proper comparison. But it'd be awesome if it did win.
Shoegirl: I know. We're totally lucky. Just the Museum District itself is so beautifully awesome, it's part of the reason I'm proud of this city.
Claudia: It's in the Montrose, basically. The link in the entry contains the address, but in case you can't see that link:
