To the Next Person Who Steals My Credit Card Number

Learn from the last person who stole my credit card number and used it to make a fake credit card. Learn from his mistakes, and you'll be able to steal more money from my account:

1. Don't go to McDonald's or Dunkin Donuts. I never go there. Try Starbucks, Einstein Bros. Bagels, your local bubble teahouse, or Jack in the Box. That way, my bank won't immediately look at my transactions and say, "What the...? Gwen never eats McRibs! And there's no way in hell she'd go to Dunkin Donuts instead of Shipley's!"

2. I don't know what the last guy spent $211 on at Duane Reed, but you be sure to buy your drugs at Walgreen's, and throw in a bunch of buy-one-get-one-half-off lipglosses to make it look authentic.

3. Biggest hint of all: Don't use my credit card number in New York. I don't live in New York.

4. If you must disregard tip #1 and go to McDonald's, anyway, then at least refrain from going twice in the same day. Dude. Come on. Spice it up a little. What's the use of being a criminal if you won't even risk trying new foods?

I'm just going to delurk for a minute to say that I'm sorry you have to deal with this. I hope the situation gets resolved quickly and as painlessly as possible. Despite your fantastic attitude (the list was entertaining AND full of valuable pointers for future thieves!), this has to grate.

Hi Gwen,

That sucks!

Someone a dozen years ago stole my husbands social security number and bought a truck and didn't pay the payment and one month later it was repossed, so they ruined our credit for seven years. We had to challenge it repeatly and what really sucked for us was the collecting agency that was suppositly going after us (we never heard from them they where in Texas this whole thing was in Texas--I live in California) had already went out of business.

Good luck.

ElenaJ: Thanks. Luckily, my bank was on the ball and declined the card on the fourth transaction, then contacted me. The only lame thing about it is waiting for them to remove the charges from my account... Oh, and having to get a whole new card number, and to switch that number on, like, every single automatic bill pay I have set up.

Besides that, it's no biggie. :)

Janice: Oh, wow. That's horrendous. Sorry to hear that.

That blows, I'm so sorry! I'm glad the bank was all over it - just this week my check card number was stolen, but the bank stopped it before anyone could use it. Of course, I was really confused when I tried to run errands after work, but I'd rather be a little inconvenienced than totally screwed.

I hope they replace your money ASAP!
