BangsI want to cut my hair so that it has bangs, ending at my eyebrows.
I don't need my boyfriend's permission to do this, and I don't want his approval, but I do value his opinion. I asked his honest opinion: Did he think bangs would look good on me, with my hair its current length?
I can't get a straight answer out of him. Like most men in America, he's been conditioned to answer nothing negative to that sort of thing. He doesn't know. He'd have to think about it. He's not sure what kind of bangs I mean. We were at the costume shop. I tried on a wig. "Bangs like this. Just like this. What do you think? Should I do it?" He doesn't know.
So, of course, I'm worried. Is it that he thinks the bangs would be a horrible mistake, but he's scared he'll piss me off by telling me?
Is it that, even though they'd look okay, he wouldn't like them, personally, himself?
Is it that he doesn't care?
Maybe he really doesn't know.
Why do I care? Because I value his opinion, like I value my best friend's.
Why is it so hard for a man to give his opinion?
I'm going to survey all my girlfriends, instead. I value my boyfriend's opinion, but it isn't available in this case. So... onward.
There. That's too much time spent worrying about my hair. Onward.
(Thank you, Nyarlathotep, for taking the picture of me in the wig. :) )

I think boys are just retarded about hair. I have short hair, but was toying with the idea of growing it out (my hair changes all the time- going through a short period now). I asked my boyfriend, would you like me to grow my hair out? Or leave it short? He said, uh, let me think about it. After a day, I decided, shit, he doesn't care, and I can't deal with how shaggy it looks, so I'm cutting it. So I did. And he's like, oh, it looks nice.# posted by MissPinkKate : 10:16 PM
I agree - boys are retarded about hair. I have this friend, let's call him Rob, who couldn't tell these two friends of ours who happen to be twins apart. Now, they were identical, true. But Janet had bangs and Tina did not. He still couldn't tell them apart. Even after we stood them both infront of him and said "Look. One has hair on her forehead. The other does not." He still couldn't see it. So puzzling.

Do it. IT can grow back if you hate it. And make sure that your hair person cuts them so that you can sweep them to the side if you hate the look....

Jeremy couldn't tell me whether to get bangs either. He was all, "sure, go for it," but not because he thought it'd look good, just because he was trying to be encouraging. He didn't think it would look bad, either. He just had no opinion.
I got the bangs and LOVE the bangs, and he really likes them too. But men are really not very useful for the pre-haircut decision help.

Do it. Your hair grows fast.

I'd think about it if I were you. Even if your hair grows three times faster than everyone else, you're still going to have a couple of months of "there's fuck all I can do with these damn bangs in my face argh!" Although I just looked at your flickr pictures and it looks like you have semi-bangs that are almost ending at the eyebrow bangs anyway, so why not? Just keep in mind they take maintenance--like once a month trims and it's harder to do it yourself than you might think.

"Bang issues". Hee.
I say do it. If you don't like them you can always pin them back with pretty sparkly clips until they grow out again.

Hi Gwen,
My husband a few months ago asked me to grow out my bangs insteed of cutting them again.
he said long bangs look sexy on women, especially when we moved them from in front of our eyes.

i guess it IS a guy thing. when my boyfriend and i met, i had uber-short hair. now it's really long. i said the other day i was thinking about cutting it short again and asked what he thought. he said it looked fine short. so, i asked if it looked better long, and all i got was, "it's beautiful both ways." i don't know whether he actually has a preference or is really that lackadaisical about it.

The annoyingest thing, for me, personally, is that Tad normally *does* have a preference, and he usually isn't shy about sharing it. So that, even more, makes me think that maybe I looked like a hideous troll with the bangs-wig, and he just doesn't want to tell me.
I made him read this entry in the hopes of prompting a real response. When he was done, all he said was, "I love you, baby."
I'm taking it to a higher authority. I'm taking it to my stylist.
Janice: Thank you for sharing your man's opinion, though. Tell him we appreciate his candor.

Oh, and thanks, everyone, for your bang advice. Y'all are good. And knowledgeable.
