Current Events

May 3, Houston: The big one -- the Inprint reading -- occurs at the Alley Theatre on Monday, May 3. Do not miss it or you'll be sorry. I'm not kidding -- I'm going to say the craziest, most intellectual yet hilarious stuff I can think of, and I'll be sharing the stage with the ultra sexy Oscar Casares, too.

June 24, Houston: I'm one of the peeps scheduled to read at Poison Pen, at Houston's famous Poison Girl bar. Besides me, everyone there will be ultra, *super* sexy. Come see me and drink!

June 26, Washington, DC: I'll be reading at the American Library Association conference. Come on down.

My other blog: Go read my the Houston Chronicle parenting blog (or my ChronMomBlog, as I like to call it) and make sure my kids won't resent me more than other kids resent their own parents.

Buy my new novel, Lone Star Legend. Already did? Well, buy a few more for your friends, then. :)

A Fun Quiz for You

I got this meme from Drew.

The Rules:
Step 1: Put your iPod/MP3 player or iTunes on random.
Step 2: Post the first line(s) from the first 20 songs that play, no matter how embarrassing the song.
Step 3: Post it on your blog and let everyone guess what song and artist the lines come from.
Step 4: Update the list with the song title when someone guesses correctly. (I will identify any unguessed songs by Monday.)
Step 5: Make your guesses by leaving a comment or sending me email. You have to identify both title and artist, and you're not allowed to Google any of these, either.

Here they be:

1. "I said what you wanted to hear and what I wanted to say."
Ben Folds Five, "Selfless, Cold, and Composed" [Joe Tank]

2. "They don't know what they like so much about me."
Liz Phair, "Nashville"

3. "I'm not a boy, I'm not a man..."
Prince, "I Would Die 4 U" [Stinkydog]

4. "Working on the weekend, baby, she's working all through the night."
Duran Duran, "Skin Trade" [John D.]

5. "Words like violence break the silence."
Depeche Mode, "Enjoy the Silence" [Jeffytown, USA]

6. "I'm waiting for my man, twenty-six dollars in my hand."
The Velvet Underground, "I'm Waiting for the Man" [Mr. Bean]

7. "I come from a long way away."
The Clash, "Red Angel Dragnet" [Melissa]
(I made this one purple because Melissa guessed the right artist and album.)

8. "Buddy you're a boy, make a big noise..."
Queen, "We Will Rock You" [Laura Lark]

9. "Turn on my VCR, same one I've had for years."
The Police, "When the World Is Running Down" [Edith]

10. "Sleep, sleep tonight, and may your dreams be realized."
U2, "MLK" [Candice]

11. "I waited til I saw the sun."
Nora Jones, "Don't Know Why" [Lumenatrix]

12. "That's right, pleased to meet you, I still don't wanna tell you my name."
Vanity 6, "Nasty Girl" [Drew]

13. "Don't let me hear you say life's taking you nowhere, angel."
David Bowie, "Golden Years" [Lumenatrix]

14. "All I can say is that my life is pretty plain."
Blind Melon, "No Rain" [Lumenatrix]

15. "Can I look at faces that I meet, can I get my punk ass off the street?"
Third Eye Blind, "Graduate" [CJ]

16. "Tonight the city is full of morgues and all the toilets are overflowing."
Beck, "Pay No Mind/Snoozer" [Laura Lark]

17. "I'd rather be the devil than be that woman's man."
Skip James, "Devil Got My Woman"

18. "And if I say to you tomorrow, 'Take my hand child, come with me...'"
Led Zeppelin, "What Is and What Should Never Be" [Girl in Greenwood]

19. "Everyone, everyone around here, everyone is so near."
Radiohead, "The National Anthem" [Candice]

20. "Like a fool I've went and stayed too long, now I'm wonderin' if your love's still strong."
Stevie Wonder, "Signed Sealed Delivered" [Laura Lark]

[Apparently, in my case, this game could also be called An Exercise in Old, Moldy Gen-X Music.]

Well, apparently I am equally old and moldy.. but I am definitely going to identify #18 as Led Zeppelin, "What Is and What Should Never Be" Rock!

#5 is "Enjoy the Silence" by Depeche Mode. Of course, I know the song because of the Tori Amos remake, which is also quite good.

# posted by Blogger Jeffytown, USA : 12:59 AM

#14 No rain, Blind Melon

#13 Golden Years, David Bowie

Yay me, I can never guess these things. :)

# posted by Blogger lumenatrix : 3:03 AM

Ooh ooh, and #11 is Don't Know Why, Nora Jones

# posted by Blogger lumenatrix : 3:05 AM

Curses! The only one I knew for sure was Blind Melon. But this is fun - I'm going to do it on my blog.

#12 - Rolling Stones, Sympathy for the Devil

#14 - Blind Melon, No Rain

#15 - Third Eye Blind, Graduate

Good job, you guys!

CJ: Re #12 - you're thinking "Please allow me to introduce myself, I'm a man..." etc.

10. U2 — "MLK," off The Unforgettable Fire

# posted by Blogger Candice : 8:46 AM

#12 is Nasty Girl, by The Vanity 6

# posted by Blogger Drew : 10:00 AM

I should add that the version of "Nasty Girl" I have on my iPod is by Inaya Day - just in case you have the same one. I don't want to lose on a technicality!

# posted by Blogger Drew : 10:24 AM

Oh, wow, I need to hear that remake.

I deleted "Wild Horses" from the list for that reason - didn't want people to guess Rolling Stones when it was the Sundays' cover. Also, I had to delete songs that had the title right there in the first line.

# posted by Blogger Gwen : 10:50 AM

#9 is the Police - I think it's "When the world is running down" (um, how old am I? I had every Police album ever made!!)

# posted by Blogger edith : 11:14 AM

#6 "I'm Waiting for the Man" Velvet Underground. A very good song about copping dope.

# posted by Blogger Mr. Bean : 2:05 PM

I know #19 is "The National Anthem" by Radiohead. It just came to me! Sweetness.

# posted by Blogger Candice : 9:32 PM

#3 is I would die 4 U by Prince, right?

I put one up too.

# posted by Blogger Stinkydog : 12:00 PM

#1 "Selfless, Cold, and Composed" by Ben Folds Five

"Apparently, in my case, this game could also be called An Exercise in Old, Moldy Gen-X Music."

Well that's only appropriate, as you are the original Spokesperson for Generation X (or spgx, as I like to call you).

# posted by Blogger Aimless : 7:24 PM

Aimless: :) I miss those days, don't you?

Y'all are so danged smart. All but one guessed!

Edith: I had them all, too. My fave Police song in the world right now is "Contact". What's yours?

# posted by Blogger Gwen : 7:47 PM

#7 is The Clash...can't remember the song title but I think it's on Combat Rock?

# posted by Blogger Melissa : 1:20 PM

Gwen, you have good musical taste. This is an unsually fun meme. I usually can't be bothered, but I'm going to tag myself and do this one.

# posted by Blogger Kaijsa : 1:29 PM

Yes, v. good taste. I love mouldy Gen-X stuff!

I'm too late to guess yours. But I've done one of these too - come and guess mine! Because no-one reads my blog but I want to play!

BTW, long-time reader, first time poster (at least I don't think I've posted a comment before, but I may have emailed once I think). But like everyone else, I adore your blog and writing!
