Something FunDo y'all know what geocaching is? It is, apparently, a sort of treasure hunt people undertake using GPS devices.
At a public place near my day job, I encountered geocachers while eating my lunch. The weather was glorious and, if I hadn't already spent most of my lunch hour walking to the sandwich place and back, I totally would've horned in on the expedition and looked for the geocache myself.
Maggie, the hunter I met, told me that sometimes the caches contain prizes. Usually they contain a log so people can write down "I was here!" and whatever else. She said it's a lot fun, for kids and everyone else. A good excuse to enjoy the weather and visit places you wouldn't know about otherwise.
According to the web site, the GPS trackers (which look like PDAs or cell phones) start at $100 per. I probably won't buy one any time soon. But next time I meet a geocacher on a mission, I'll definitely stop to help.
Good luck, Maggie. Happy hunting.

My brother-in-law took my sister geocaching to propose to her. When she opened the box, it was full of roses, and she said in dismay, "Oh, someone's going to ask someone to marry them." She was upset because she wished it were her. He was like, "Umm . . . "# posted by alphaharpy : 8:38 AM
Ok I just spent ooooodles of time reading all about this, thanks for letting me get sidetracked again. *snarfle* But I had never heard of this. This sounds like something right up my son's alley. How fun it sounds. I wonder if you can pick up cheap GPS units on ebay? 100 sounds steep for a game but in a way its a sport, its about the same amount I just spent on some PS2 and computer games but its a healthy game (re: outside). Hmmmmmmmmmmm I gotta think about this, it sounds way fun.

Sorry, Gwen, I can't concentrate. I am starving and you mentioned a sandwich and then my mind started to wander and my mouth started to water. Are you done with the low carb dieting? I did it for two years and went from fat to downright skinny. I've gained back about 12 pounds and am now pleasantly plump. For some reason I just can't seem to get motivated to stay on the diet. I go to the gym 3-4 times and week and still not seeing much improvement. Sigh.

Hi Gwen,
That game sounds a little like an updated version of a game we use to play at sleep over's, we called it a scavenger hunt!

alpha: Funny!
Pixie: Getting the GPS on eBay is a really good idea. Keep us posted. Did you see how they call non-geo-cachers muggles?
DiorG: Girl, I haven't been dieting crap. I've been eating "a little bread only" and I'm fat as hell. I'll post fat pictures soon, and those will inspire you not to gain too much.
Janice: I know, right? Everything's high tech now.
ShoeG: Thank you. Glad you liked it.

I know I'm way behind on this post but we geocache, and my 9-year-old LOVES it, she gets to use math and science and nature skills, and it's such a great family activity that it was worth the price for the Garmin eTrex. Go with Garmin, their units are indestructible.
